Dental Implants Q & A

Why dental implants?

Our experienced and knowledgeable implant team can help you rediscover the confidence to eat, speak, laugh, and enjoy your life with a winning smile. When you’re missing teeth, your face can sag or appear sunken, so dental implants also help retain your natural face shape.

If you’ve lost one or more of your teeth, you’ll experience deterioration of some of your jawbone, so the most important reason to consider a dental implant is to protect your healthy jaw.  Dental implants are the only dental restoration option that preserves and stimulates your natural bone.

What is a dental implant?

Dental implants are titanium posts placed into your jawbone where your teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for the implant. Before dental implant technology came along, there were no securely fixed prosthetics available for people who lost all their teeth. Thanks to advances in dentistry, we can use dental implants to create a permanent, stable and beautiful smile. Dental implants are the most permanent solution to missing teeth.

Will I feel any pain during surgery?

The drilling and screwing of posts may sound painful, but placing an implant isn’t painful at all for most people. A good thing to know is that the bone where implants are placed doesn’t have many pain-sensing nerves.

Usually, Dr. Sholudko uses a local anesthetic, which means you’re awake during the process. He also provides sedation dentistry to help you sleep through the entire procedure if you wish.

What happens after a dental implant procedure?

Like any dental surgery, you may experience some of the typical discomforts including:

  • Swelling of your gums and face
  • Bruising of your skin and gums
  • Pain at the implant site
  • Minor bleeding

Call Silver Lake Dental Care if the swelling and discomfort get worse in the days after surgery.

We’ll examine your situation and may prescribe pain medications or antibiotics as needed.

After dental implant surgery, use an icepack (or packages of frozen vegetables) to reduce swelling, and eat soft foods for the next 14 days. Also, rinsing gently with warm salt water will help soothe your healing gum tissues and provide additional relief.
