Bridges Q & A

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge literally bridges the gap between one or more of your teeth. In most cases, we create a traditional dental bridge which is a filler tooth attached to two nearby dental crowns. If needed, we can also create “cantilever” bridge, which is used when abutment teeth are located on only one side of the missing tooth.

Why should I consider a dental bridge?

Dental bridges can improve your oral health by filling in the gaps in your mouth and helping you chew, as well as helping to prevent gum disease or further tooth loss. Plus, you’ll be able to improve the aesthetics of your smile.

Here’s how getting a dental bridge can benefit you:

  • Restores the beauty of your smile, filling in the blanks and masking any tooth damage
  • Prevents your remaining teeth from drifting, which protects against serious dental problems like periodontal disease
  • Helps protect the integrity of your existing teeth
  • Can restore the ability to speak properly and chew

What can I expect during my dental bridge procedure?

The first step is to remove the enamel from your supporting teeth to make space for the dental bridge. Dr. Sholudko will then take impressions of your teeth to create your dental bridge. He’ll check and adjust your bridge to make sure it fits comfortably. Finally, if you feel the bridge is comfortable, Dr.Sholudko will cement it into your mouth.

What are the benefits of dental bridges?

Most people choose dental bridges for a combination of cost and cosmetic reasons. Bridges are more secure in your mouth compared to dentures. Bridges also cost less than dental implants in some cases. Dr. Sholudko will explain whether a bridge is your best option, or if you would benefit from a different kind of treatment.
